I’m wishing for rain
The dull ache in my chest
The pain in my bones

Take the winding path
Whisper your story to me
Open the heart wide

go back to the storm
to the restless summer heat
afternoons, sweating

Harsh cries of ravens
Dark against the swollen skies
Shatter the rainclouds

Intentions

Intentions (17 May 2016)

I never knew
What lonely was
Until I met myself
this morning
dropping nickels
for a whole litany of saints
lighting candles.
The wax melted away
revealing just the spine
bearing the weight
of these futile
intentions.

I stood beneath
the curve
of the cathedral bell
hoping she would deafen me
so I wouldn’t hear the silence.
Sweet lady of mercy,
refuge from relentless rain.
I felt the brazen
vibration of your call
through every bone.

I traced my hand
fingers trembling
along the carvings
in the walls.
Ancient faces
Heavy with memories
Melancholy
Bound to watch those
Broken passing beside them.
I could not ask
their names.

I moved on downtown
trying to find my way to you.
Through the throngs
Of people moving, moving.
Through the rain
The running black of train tracks
Bearing me back
To that night

I cried out the darkness
well into the morning,
you in the bathtub.
A haphazard baptism
to say the least,
trying to drown
out my sins
beneath the rush
of the faucet.

The boys on the street
jingle their cups
in the yellow city lights
asking for change.
But I tossed all my nickels
to the wind
a lifetime ago.

Glimpse of light on pines
Branches beg the warmth to stay,
And I look away.

These stories, all ancient,
as old at the dusted hills,
come back each morning

Secretly an Ocean

Secretly an Ocean (12 December 2015)

our love was secretly an ocean
stronger than you could have ever been
greater than I could have ever been

the fickle sea
and its jealous undercurrents
with constant churning
changing our fate
with a wave
of its hand

and I was just a girl
floating away
in your arms
while you swam
against the stream
to pull me back to shore

the one good thing
I guess
about having love
that is secretly an ocean
is that it’s ever deep
ever changing
each rainstorm
swelling our hearts
while each red sky at night
reminds me of you

the one good thing
I guess
about having love
that is secretly an ocean
is that the tides
stronger than you ever
could have been
greater than I ever
could have been
always bring us back
to land

All these countless lines
Bring me no closer to you
The days, they just pass
